Particularly, in Hindu marriages it is important to perform each and every ritual on the right ‘muhurtam’ and in the right manner to ensure a happy life of the newly wedded couple. All of these rituals have a meaning and are done for a specific purpose.
After getting married when the kamma bride and the kamma grooms come to the groom’s house the ritual of ‘gruha pravesham’ is performed. It is not just some age old superstition but there are also some scientific reasons behind this ritual.
Psychological Reason
The psychological reason behind this tradition is that when the bride walks into the house leaving behind her footprints, it indicates everyone that a family will prosper only if it respects the women in the house.
This ceremony relates to the journey of the wife to her husband’s home. There are many Veda mantras associated with this journey. These mantras pray to the appropriate Vedic gods to remove all obstacles that one can experience in a journey. The kamma brides is requested to become the mistress of the house and is reminded of her important role among the relatives of her husband. After reaching her new home, she puts her right foot first in the house and recites the following Veda mantras:
I enter this house with a happy heart. May I give birth to children, who observe the path of righteousness (dharma)! May this house that I enter today be prosperous forever and never be deficient in food. May this house be populated by people of virtue and pious thoughts.
In north India Kalash ritual is followed, which is described below :
Reason behind the Kalash ritual after marriage :
It is a known fact that a kalash is a very important vessel or pooja instrument that is used in almost all worship and marriage rituals. A woman or a kamma bride in particular is said to be an incarnation of goddess Lakshmi who is bound to bring in wealth and prosperity within the household after her marriage. The significance of the bride pushing a kalash inside the house is a symbol of her letting in prosperity, wealth and good luck within the household.
Rice is an ingredient that is considered to be very auspicious and is used in almost all holy ceremonies. The members of the in-laws house place a pot completely filled with rice right in front of the door. The fact that the pot is completely filed with rice signifies the abundance of wealth that the new bride is expected to bring within the house.
