In India Hindus consider marriage as a sacred association, between two souls, not just two bodies. Wedding is meant for the continuation of family and practice of dharma. According to Hinduism, marriage (pelli) between two persons is a very sacred relationship that is not limited to this life alone. It extends across seven or more lives, during which the couple help each other progress spiritually. The saying that marriages are made in heaven is very much true in case of Hindu tradition. Two souls come together and marry because their karmas are intertwined and they have to resolve many things together upon earth in order to ensure their mutual salvation.

An ancient Vedic tradition advises bride and groom to fast on the day of their wedding as that hindu ritual holds lot of scientific and spiritual significance.

They fast from daybreak until after the uncovering veil, eating their first meal during their yichud (not seeing each other) till the end of the ceremony.

Let us look into the scientific and spiritual significance of the fast by kamma brides and kamma grooms. There are namely two reasons for fasting.

First, tradition records that the sins of the bride and groom are forgiven on their wedding day. Because it is a day of forgiveness, it is considered a day of spiritual inventory and of repentance, as represented by the fasting, the wearing of white, and the recitation of the confession at prayers.

The second reason is more practical, and halakhically more functional. The Vedic sages sought to avoid the drinking of liquor before the wedding, as guests and relatives toast the future. The kamma customary wedding fast lasts only until after the wedding rituals is over, even if it takes place in the afternoon. It is not necessary to “make-up” the fast on another day, in the event of a midday covering.

The relationship between the married couple is essentially a relationship of the souls.
